Kyoto is a gourmet’s delight throughout the year, however it is little known that winter is the best season for many seafood varieties as well as for many vegetables produced locally around Kyoto. Seasonal produce of particular note to look out for include: seafood from the Sea of Japan, such as sea bream known as guji or aka-amadai, and matsuba crabs; as well as Kyoto vegetables such as syogoin daikon radish, kintoki carrots, and mizuna leaves to name a few.
Fushimi: Home to Fresh Waters, Sake and Echoes of Yesteryear
Many international tourists visit Fushimi Inari-taisha, which has been ranked No. 1 for the most popular tourist attraction in Japan for the 5 consecutive years at TripAdvisor, but there are more hidden gems in Fushimi Ward. Located in the south of Kyoto, Fushimi Ward has long played a role as an important transportation hub connecting Kyoto and Osaka by river.
In addition to sampling the wares that Fushimi has to offer, visitors to the region are also encouraged to enjoy the landscape and historical scenery of the area by taking the 50 minute Jikkokubune Cruise. Once onboard the vessel, passengers meander by many historical buildings including traditional boat taverns and the signature burnt-wooden and white plaster walls. The many willow trees and other seasonal flora that lines the river’s banks also make the journey a very special and beautiful experience.
