Art and luxury maison SAUVEREIGN presents SAUVEREIGN BY STUDIO PUTMAN, an entirely new collection of wearable sculptural ornaments, or Gems, as well as home goods created in collaboration with internationally celebrated French design studio: Studio Putman. Launching a collection that traverses two completely different disciplines, SAUVEREIGN BY STUDIO PUTMAN marks the inauguration of a new product category for both maisons.
The partnership between the two maisons is led by Bertrand Mak, founder and chief creator of SAUVEREIGN, and Olivia Putman, daughter to Andrée Putman, the late legendary French interior and product designer, and heir to the eponymous Studio. Owing to the distinct natures of their respective mediums, the collaboration poses a challenge of coalescing colliding philosophies. The first-ever collaboration between Studio Putman and an Asian designer, the resultant creations embody a duality in their designs.
Olivia Putman: From Interior Architecture and Scenography to Wearable Objects
Olivia Putman’s impeccable taste and talent is reflected in her reimagination of interior spaces and environments. A legacy to her late mother, Andrée Putman, Olivia continues to perpetuate signature motifs, such as checkerboard patterns, in her designs today. The SAUVEREIGN by STUDIO PUTMAN collection is a challenge to Olivia to contain her vision within a singular object, transforming each surface into a microcosm of the world as she perceives it.
Bertrand Mak: Mosaic of Details
Fundamental to Bertrand Mak’s practice is a fastidious attention to detail, driven by his affinity for haute horlogerie. His perception of the world is as if a mosaic of details, coming together to form a picture evocative of both pain and beauty. With an eye for detail and a sensibility for intricate compositions, his collaboration with Putman bridges the transformation from large to small, combining two aesthetics to create a collection of gold and monochromatic mosaics.
Duality of Design
A collaboration between two designers of different cultural heritage, the SAUVEREIGN BY STUDIO PUTMAN collection is also an intersection of the east and west. Influenced by millennia of history, eastern sensibilities, from architecture and artefacts to philosophies of health and wellbeing, are informed by a fascination with longevity and eternal life. In contrast, 21st century western society, having experienced many and monumental changes in art and culture, has adapted and developed an appreciation for ephemeral beauty. A collection that fuses the exuberance of joie de vivire and the pursuit of permanence, SAUVEREIGN BY STUDIO PUTMAN is a cross-section and step towards the dissolution of the East-West dichotomy.
The Collection
The SAUVEREIGN BY STUDIO PUTMAN collection comprises handcrafted classic, limited edition, as well as unique pieces in its catalogue of newly launched Gems. Designed in homage to Andrée Putman’s iconic checkerboard motif, the Gems feature mosaics in various materials and levels of detail. The unique piece, titled Queen’s Blue, is handmade in Geneva, Switzerland. Concentrically arranged around a light champagne pearl sourced along the shores of South Sea, delicate tiles of satined and polished 18-carat gold bloom into a gradient of individually mounted blue sapphire stones. Embellished atop an also 18-carat gold base, Queen’s Blue combines SAUVEREIGN’s affinity for preciousness and Putman’s minimalist aesthetic – an avant-garde work of wearable art, radiating with timeless elegance, unprecedented in the realm of art and luxury.
Composed of 18-carat gold, white gold, and an array of varied gemstones, SAUVEREIGN BY STUDIO PUTMAN Limited Edition Gems resemble a mosaic of levitating tiles. Collaging precious materials including Onyx, Lapis, Topaz, Mother of Pearl, and Chalcedony, these Gems come in two styles, each pair merely available as a limited edition of 50.
SAUVEREIGN BY STUDIO PUTMAN Wall Mirror
Created in parallel with the new series of Gems is a wall mirror and compact mirror, handmade in Venice, Italy. The wall mirror is gilded in gold leaf and applied with verre églomisé. Its light but complex frame, weighed at 40kg, is composed with more than two hundred different brass-made pieces and details. Presenting gold in various textures and forms, the mirrors combine traditional craftsmanship with creative innovation and flair. A part of SAUVEREIGN’s venture into artistic and luxury décor, the mirrors are also an evolution of Putman’s transition from space to objects. Reflected through SAUVEREIGN BY STUDIO PUTMAN mirrors, all spaces are captured through the lens of the designer.
